While June may be the busiest month for video game showcases, the summer doesn’t truly end until Gamescom Opening Night Live. The annual live stream, which kicks off the Gamescom convention in Germany, has become the biggest gaming show outside of Summer Game Fest. That’s no coincidence considering that Geoff Keighley hosts both. This year’s Opening Night Live was a major one, with over 60 reveals across the two-hour show (and a half hour pre-show beforehand).
What’s was on the docket? More heavy hitters than usual. We got new looks at Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Monster Hunter Wilds, Civilization 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and much more. We even got a few major surprises in the form of Borderlands 4 and Masters of Albion, a new game from the legendary Peter Molyneux. Plus, we got tons of release dates that solidified the rest of this year’s holiday calendar.
If you didn’t watch it live, or just want to catch up after the long show, we’ve catalogued every single announcement from the event here.
Borderlands 4 gets a dramatic reveal
Borderlands 4 got a grand reveal with a dramatic teaser trailer. We saw realistic video of planets crashing and burning before we got a glimpse at an iconic raider mask. It was a bit of a troll, which is fitting for the series. We don’t know much about it beyond that, but it’s set to launch in 2025.
Dying Light: The Beast is unleashed
After its teaser ahead of Gamescom, we got a look at a new Dying Light game called Dying Light: The Beast. The trailer showed some familiar first-person gameplay, with lots of parkour and zombie murder. It’s an entirely new game set in an open world rather than a spinoff. Keighley notes that it will be around 20 hours long, making it a bit shorter than your average Dying Light game.
Dune: Awakening gets a big overview trailer
Dune: Awakening will release in early 2025. We got the news alongside the deepest look we’ve seen on the game yet. We saw everything including customization, character classes, base building, and more. Crafting is a big part of the game, as players use replicators to create objects and sell blueprints to other players. We also saw a lot of exploration on Arrakis, as players can pilot an ornithopter to different settlements full of factions and other players. And, of course, we got a glimpse at some intense battles over spice.
Monster Hunter Wilds gets an exciting trailer
We saw a new Monster Hunter Wilds trailer, which gave us even more details about the action RPG’s story and creatures. We saw a crew of hunters exploring the world and learning about the lightning-fueled apex predator stalking it. We also saw some fights against giant spiders and furry critters. We still don’t have a release date for the game, but it’s set to launch in 2025.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is coming next April
SNK jumped into what’s sure to be a crowded 2025 with its official release date for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. The fighting game will launch on April 25, 2025, for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Preorders went live during the Opening Night Live broadcast. Those who buy a $60 special edition will get the base game and a Season 1 pass. We also got several new details about the game. It’ll launch with 17 fighters, rollback netcode, deep customization, and cross-platform play. As for other features, we know it’ll feature a standard Arcade Mode, as well as Episodes of South Town, a new single-player RPG mode.
Civilization VII is coming in February
After a vague teaser this June, we got a lot more details about Civilization VII. We got a look at its new art style, which was showcased in glimpses at various world locations. More importantly, though, it will launch on February 11, making it one of 2025’s first big game releases. Firaxis will show even more gameplay during its own Twitch stream later tonight.
Starfield: Shattered Space drops next month
We finally know when Starfield: Shattered Space is coming. The expansion will launch on September 30. That date was revealed in a new gameplay trailer that showed off its darker, supernatural tone. Not only that, but we got a fun “infomercial” for Starfield‘s first ground vehicle, the REV-8. We saw clips of it bounding over planets. The drivable car will be available later tonight after an update.
Masters of Albion is Peter Molyneux’s new game
In a big surprise, legendary game creator Peter Molyneux came out to reveal his latest game. Masters of Albion is a self-funded project that calls back to his old work on games like Black and White. It’s a top-down town management game where players can micromanage a village and its inhabitants. Players can also jump into a character and explore the world in third person. Molyneux is working on the game with a small team made up of some veterans who worked on games like Black and White. It will launch on PC and consoles.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to PS5
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will launch on December 9. It’ll also come to PS5 in spring 2025. We learned that in a new trailer showing off several new gameplay details. The new clip, narrated by Troy Baker, focused on gameplay. We saw Indiana Jones rappelling up walls with his whip, using a torch, and brawling with Nazis in first person. The trailer also highlighted its puzzles, globe-trotting story, and tools like his camera.
