Arthur Fleck is singing and dancing his way to Max this month. Joker: Folie à Deux will be available to stream on Max starting on Friday, December 13. It will then make its HBO linear debut at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, December 14.

Polarizing doesn’t even begin to describe Joker: Folie à Deux. Most audiences and critics completely rejected Todd Phillips’ musical. In his two-star review for Digital Trends, A.A. Dowd wrote: “The Joker sequel is unlikely to satisfy old fans or convert new ones.”

Two years after murdering Murray Franklin on live television, Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) has been committed to Arkham State Hospital, where he awaits his trial. Joker has been elevated to hero status in Gotham, but Arthur suffers from an identity crisis inside Arkham. Arthur’s outlook on life changes after meeting fellow patient Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (Lady Gaga). The duo expresses their love through song and dance as Arthur “finds the music that’s always been inside him.”

While Joker became a resounding success, Folie à Deux will go down as a critical and commercial failure. The Joker sequel has a “D” Cinemascore and a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. Made on an estimated $200 million budget, Folie à Deux grossed $206 million worldwide. Warner Bros. is expected to lose up to $200 million on Folie à Deux.

Quentin Tarantino is Joker 2’s biggest fan: ‘One of the best performances I’ve ever seen’
Quentin Tarantino smiles on the right while the Joker stands on the right.

Quentin Tarantino has never been afraid to express his opinion. Tarantino's latest statement is about Joker: Folie à Deux, the much-maligned sequel. Not only did Tarantino love the movie but he cited Joaquin's Phoenix acting in Joker 2 as "one of the best performances" he's ever seen in his life.

"I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking,” Tarantino said in an interview on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. "But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. And I’m just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie or that’s like a big, giant mess to some degree. And I didn’t find it an intellectual exercise. I really got caught up into it. I really liked the musical sequences."

2024’s most divisive thriller is finally streaming on Max. Here’s why you should watch it
A man is being tortured in Trap.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the most divisive filmmakers of the past 30 years. After achieving breakout success in the late '90s and early 2000s with acclaimed thrillers like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, his reputation began to sour following the releases of largely critical failures like The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening. In recent years, Shyamalan has experienced a late-career resurgence writing and directing modestly budgeted, high-concept thrillers (see: Split, Old, Knock at the Cabin). He remains, however, one of Hollywood's most polarizing directors.

You need look no further than the reception to his latest film, Trap, for proof of that. The serial killer thriller was both embraced and tossed aside in equal measure when it hit theaters in early August. Some were quick to share their praise for the film's technical craftsmanship and perfectly pitched lead performance, while others dismissed it based on Shyamalan's consistently stiff dialogue and its absurdly twisty third act. Now, several months later, Trap is officially streaming on Max.
