Andrew Garfield says he had to work very hard to get people to ask less about Spider-Man

Over the past decade, Andrew Garfield has worked hard to prove that he’s more than just his Spider-Man character. Even so, Garfield admitted during a press conference at the Marrakesh Film Festival that he’s still “had to work very hard to have less people ask questions about Spider-Man.

“I’m still working on it, obviously. It’s an imperfect process,” he added. Garfield is currently sitting on a jury at the festival alongside Luca Guadagnino and Jacob Elordi. Garfield added that, in spite of his reticence to continue answering questions about that role, he was “grateful” for it because “it allowed [him] to maybe have an easier shot at working with people like Martin Scorsese straight after.”

Garfield added that his Spider-Man clout may have indirectly helped Scorsese get financing for his 2016 film Silence. “I think Marty probably was able to get a passion project made with a guy who played Spider-Man in the lead to play a Jesuit priest in the 1600s of Japan. The fact that that film got made with the help of Spider-Man is a beautiful thing,” he explained.

Guadagnino added that he found the superhero to be a “fascinating” character.

“I remember when Sam Raimi directed his first one, and I was 28 or 29, I had these dreams because I’m kind of a megalomaniac, and I wished I had been asked to do one. So I wish I had directed you in Spider-Man,” he told Garfield.

Garfield starred in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. His franchise was then cut short, but he reprised the role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Blade: Trinity nearly killed Marvel movies. As it turns 20, we look back at what went wrong
The cast of Blade: Trinity.

Although X-Men and Spider-Man are widely credited with starting the modern comic-book movie boom in 2000 and 2002, respectively, there's an argument to be made that it was actually the original Blade movie in 1998 that got the ball rolling. Superhero movie fans don't know how good they have it now because there was a time when Marvel couldn't get a decent movie out of any of its franchises. Case in point: The Punisher movie starring Dolph Lundgren and the infamous Howard the Duck.

Blade was a game-changer in that it took a little-known Marvel anti-hero, placed Wesley Snipes in the title role and delivered a fun action flick. Stephen Norrington helmed the first film, and Guillermo del Toro stepped in to direct the sequel, Blade II, which was an even bigger success.

If you have to watch one Amazon Prime Video movie in December 2024, stream this one
Tom Hanks in Road to Perdition.

If you're looking for holiday merriment this month, you should check out the best Christmas movies on Amazon Prime Video. When it came time to pick the one Amazon Prime Video that you have to watch in December, however, we decided to go with something decidedly less cheery. Our selection for December 2024 is Road to Perdition, a 2002 crime drama directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall) from a script by David Self.

The movie is based on the 1998 graphic novel Road to Perdition by Max Allan Collins and artist Richard Piers Rayner. Despite having a future Superman in the cast, it's completely unlike most comic book movies. Road to Perdition arrived in theaters during the same era as American Splendor and Ghost World, two other unconventional comics that would be hard-pressed to get their own movies in the franchise-obsessed Hollywood of 2024. While Road to Perdition has come and gone from Prime Video several times before, it deserves the spotlight this month because the film still isn't widely regarded as the modern classic that it is.
