Underrated PS5 exclusive Forspoken is coming to PlayStation Plus this month

PlayStation Plus is ending 2024 with a bang, adding a meaty batch of compelling PS4 and PS5 games to its PS Plus Premium and Extra catalogs just before the holiday break. Of all the new games added, the most significant title included in the batch is Forspoken, a PS5-exclusive action RPG with roots going back to the first PlayStation Showcase for the PS5.

Forspoken was revealed in June 2020 under the codename Project Athia. When it finally did come out, Forspoken proved divisive because it had exhilarating magic-driven traversal and combat, but snarky dialogue that annoyed many players. Square Enix was ultimately disappointed by Forspoken‘s performance and disbanded the developer who worked on it. That said, I think this game is underrated and worth checking out for PS5 players now that they don’t have to go out of the way to purchase it themselves. Forspoken is technically a Christmas game too, which makes its December addition to PS Plus Extra’s game catalog perfect timing.

Forspoken isn’t the only notable game to hit PS Plus this month. Sonic Frontiers is also coming to this service. While I did not like this game at all, many others did. Ubisoft is also adding its enjoyable party game Rabbids: Party of Legends, while Toge Productions is bringing its Coffee Talk games and A Space for the Unbound to Sony’s subscription service. On the VR front, Premium subscribers can anticipate the addition of Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, a Star Wars first-person shooter that launched alongside the headset.

Here’s the full list of games coming to PS Plus Premium and Extra’s Game Catalog on December 17:

  • Forspoken (PS5)
  • Sonic Frontiers (PS4, PS5)
  • Rabbids: Party of Legends (PS4)
  • WRC Generations (PS4, PS5)
  • F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch (PS4, PS5)
  • Jurassic World Evolution 2 (PS4, PS5)
  • Coffee Talk (PS4, PS5)
  • Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (PS4, PS5)
  • A Space for the Unbound (PS4, PS5)

  • Biped (PS5, PS5)

Be aware that some games will leave PS Plus Extra’s game catalog the same day these titles arrive. Notable games leaving PS Plus soon include Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Judgment, and Mega Man 11.

PS5 vs. Xbox Series S
ps5 vs xbox series s release date 710x400

Between the regular PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, buying a current-gen console is not as simple as it once was. However, you do need to make the right choice if you want to play the best PS5 games or best Xbox Series games, which is the most important factor in a gaming machine. Sure, many games are now cross-platform, but not all of them. We compared the PS5 to the Xbox Series X already, but what about the S? Let's pit Sony's console against the smaller Xbox and see which one is worth it for you.
PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series S: specs
Right off the bat, we need to point out that the PS5 and Xbox Series S are aimed toward slightly different audiences, and their specs do differ a considerable amount. The PS5 is aimed toward a "premium" audience looking for high-end visuals and performance, while the Series S is presented as more of an affordable option to get as many players on board as possible. You'll notice the PS5 is a more powerful system in many ways than the Series S, but that doesn't necessarily mean deciding between the two is easy. When it comes to specs, both offer custom SSDs (solid-state drives), meaning games and apps will load incredibly fast. This is a huge upgrade from the current generation's HDDs (hard disk drives), which are starting to show their age as games become much larger in scope.

The main difference between the two on the surface is that the Series S lacks a disc drive, while the standard PS5 will accept 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs. This could be a major factor for some, especially those with less reliable internet connections. The standard PS5 will cost more than the Xbox Series S, and a lower price point could prove to be the most enticing factor when choosing one over the other.

A new batch of games will be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalogs next week, but many notable games will also leave Sony's gaming subscription service before that happens. Fans of Rockstar Games in particular will be disappointed as two of the studio's games are leaving PS Plus Extra's catalog ahead of 2025, which will potentially see the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. If you own a PS5, aren't picking up Lego Horizon Adventures, and are wondering what you should be playing this weekend, consider checking out any of these games leaving PS Plus.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 Launch Trailer

Rockstar's most recent game as of 2024, Red Dead Redemption 2, is an excellent open-world western. A prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption, it follows Arthur Morgan, who's part of Dutch van der Linde's gang alongside John Marston, as the sun sets on the Wild West and their gang slowly falls apart due to infighting, death, and questionable decisions from leaders like Dutch. It's an amazing story emboldened by a vast open world with a stunning amount of attention to even the smallest details. It's worth a revisit if you need to remind yourself why Rockstar is considered one of the best developers in the game industry and why you should truly be excited for GTA 6. If you don't own it, you don't have much time left to get that refresher for free.

Team up abilities in Marvel Rivals

The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive. It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller in the form of the new DualSense. However, a console is only as good as the games available on it and, thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.

While the machine already has a worthy library of great PS5 games, there are even more to look forward to — most of the best upcoming video games are going to hit PS5. Some will be completely free PS5 games, some will be PS5 exclusives, and others will be completely cross-platform so you can play with friends on Xbox, PC, and Switch.
