ESG Consulting Firm Hong Kong

In Hong Kong’s dynamic financial hub, where ESG performance has become a cornerstone of corporate success, GreenCo ESG Advisory Limited stands out as the premier partner for businesses navigating the complexities of sustainability. Established in 2016 and headquartered in Hong Kong, GreenCo has cemented its reputation as a trailblazer in ESG consulting, offering tailored solutions that bridge regulatory compliance, climate resilience, and long-term value creation. With a relentless focus on quality, innovation, and client success, GreenCo empowers organizations to not only meet stakeholder expectations but also lead in the global sustainability arena.

Why ESG Matters in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s regulatory environment has undergone a seismic shift, with ESG and climate risk management transitioning from voluntary initiatives to mandatory strategic imperatives. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) now requires all listed companies to publish annual ESG reports aligned with their financial cycles, disclosing metrics ranging from carbon emissions and energy efficiency to labor practices and board governance. By 2025, enhanced climate-related disclosures under the HKEX ESG Code will take effect, demanding alignment with global standards like IFRS S2. These regulations reflect a broader global trend: investors, regulators, and consumers now prioritize transparency, accountability, and climate resilience.

For businesses, robust ESG practices are critical to maintaining investor confidence, accessing sustainable finance, and safeguarding reputations. Companies who excel in ESG integration unlock opportunities such as cost savings through resource efficiency, enhanced operational resilience, and preferential access to capital from ESG-focused investors.

A Trusted Partner for Sustainable Transformation

GreenCo’s mission is to guide organizations through every phase of their ESG journey, transforming compliance into a competitive advantage. With a multidisciplinary team of experts, ISO 9001-certified processes, and a proven track record spanning over 70 listed clients across Asia, GreenCo combines technical rigor with practical insights to deliver measurable results.

Comprehensive ESG Consulting Services

GreenCo’s end-to-end services are designed to address the full spectrum of sustainability challenges:

1. ESG Strategy & Policy Development

GreenCo assists in crafting ESG policies and integrating sustainability into corporate strategy and daily operations. We assist companies in establishing governance frameworks that embed ESG considerations at every level of decision-making, ensuring alignment with Hong Kong’s corporate governance norms and stakeholder expectations.

2. Stakeholder Engagement & Materiality Assessment

GreenCo identifies the ESG issues most relevant to your business and stakeholders. Through online surveys, face-to-face interviews, and physical workshops, we assist companies in engaging with both internal and external stakeholders to pinpoint the ESG topics that are truly “material” to the organisation. This ensures your ESG report focuses on what matters most — whether it’s carbon emissions, employee welfare, or supply chain management.

3. Reporting & Disclosure

GreenCo offers end-to-end support in preparing ESG / sustainability reports that comply with your selected framework, including the HKEX ESG Code and global reporting frameworks like the GRI Standards. From data collection to report compilation, we assist companies in producing clear and impactful sustainability disclosures.

GreenCo ensures that all required disclosures—environmental KPIs (energy use, waste, water), social KPIs (employment, health & safety, anti-corruption), and governance structures—are thoroughly addressed. Every report is meticulously reviewed against HKEX’s latest guidelines and international best practices to ensure completeness and quality.

4. Climate Risk Assessment & IFRS S2 Disclosures

As experts in climate related disclosures consulting, GreenCo assist companies in the identification and assessment of climate-related risks and opportunities. This includes conducting climate scenario analysis and financial effect analysis to understand how future climate scenarios (such as 2°C vs 4°C warming) could bring risks and opportunities that impact business operations, value chain and financial performance.

With quality working and analysis results, we help companies prepare climate-related disclosure in line with the four pillars of the IFRS S2 standard: governance oversight of climate issues, climate strategies, risk management processes, and measurable metrics and targets, including GHG emissions and carbon reduction targets. With GreenCo’s expertise, companies can stay ahead of the curve and prepare for compliance with HKEX’s New Climate Requirements.

5. GHG Emissions Accounting

A comprehensive GHG profile is crucial for meeting ESG reporting requirements and serves as a foundation for assessing performance and identifying improvement areas. This profile also helps organisations align with international frameworks, such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), supporting global carbon neutrality efforts in line with the Paris Agreement.

GreenCo’s team specialises in quantifying carbon footprints by accounting Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions according to the GHG Protocol. By meticulously assessing emissions from direct operations, purchase energy use, and value-chain activities, companies can establish baselines and track their progress over time. We also guide clients in setting science-based targets to demonstrate meaningful climate action to investors and regulators.

6. ESG Data Management & Assurance

To streamline ESG reporting, GreenCo leverages advanced technology solutions, including custom ESG data collection apps and dashboards. These tools enable companies to efficiently gather ESG data across business units and track performance metrics in real time. Additionally, GreenCo can coordinate external assurance services through our partner Certified Public Accountants or internal expertise, verifying ESG data in accordance with standards such as ISAE 3000, adding an extra layer of credibility to your disclosures.

Global Standards, Local Expertise

GreenCo’s ability to harmonize Hong Kong’s regulatory requirements with international frameworks is a hallmark of its success. The firm ensures clients meet the HKEX ESG Code while simultaneously adhering to:

  • GRI Standards: Over 78% of the world’s largest companies use GRI, making it essential for global investor appeal.
  • IFRS S2: Mandates detailed climate risk disclosures, including financial impacts and transition plans.
  • SASB: Provides industry-specific metrics for sectors like finance, manufacturing, and technology.
  • UN SDGs: Aligns corporate actions with global sustainability priorities.

This dual focus ensures reports are both locally compliant and globally resonant, positioning Hong Kong companies as leaders in cross-border ESG transparency.

GreenCo’s Tools and Expertise to Empower Companies to Conquer Scope 3 Emissions https://greenco-esg.com/conquer-scope-3-emissions/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 03:05:55 +0000 https://greenco-esg.com/?p=11898

conquer scope 3 emissions

GreenCo, as an experienced ESG consulting firm in Hong Kong and Singapore, has recently observed that many companies are facing challenges in quantifying and disclosing their Scope 3 greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions – the indirect emissions that occur outside of a company’s direct operations. With the global focus on climate action and environmental, social, and governance (“ESG”) reporting obligations continues to intensify, especially for stock exchanges such as the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the Singapore Stock Exchange and the three stock exchanges in Mainland China, GreenCo sees the need for companies, especially listed companies to understand and manage their value chain emissions has become increasingly critical. In response, GreenCo has developed well-structured workflows and procedures that empower its clients to navigate the complexities of Scope 3 GHG emissions accounting.

The Challenges of Scope 3 Emissions Accounting

Accounting for Scope 3 emissions can be an immensely complex and resource-intensive undertaking, as companies will need to navigate a web of data availability issues, supplier engagement challenges, and difficulties in mapping their value chain.

Adding to this complexity, as requested by most well-recognised international frameworks, initiatives and reporting requirements, companies should account for their GHG emissions according to the GHG Protocol, which require organisations to consider 15 distinct emissions categories, from purchased goods and services all the way to employee commuting and investments. Properly addressing the minimum requirements of each identified category requires careful consideration and a comprehensive approach.

Without a clear and comprehensive understanding of their Scope 3 footprint, businesses face significant hurdles in setting meaningful emissions reduction targets and meeting the growing expectations of regulators, investors, and consumers.

Based on our experiences, we see many companies struggle to engage with their suppliers and external parties to obtain the necessary information, leading to data gaps and incomplete emissions profiles. Additionally, the lack of standardised methodologies and procedures also make it difficult for them to ensure the comparability of Scope 3 disclosures.

Max Tsang, Director of GreenCo

“The complexity of Scope 3 emissions accounting is a major barrier for many companies, but it’s also a critical area of opportunity,” explained Max, “By taking a strategic approach to mapping their value chain emissions, organisations can unlock valuable insights that inform their sustainability roadmap and explore competitive advantage.”

The Benefits of Proactive Management

Dr. Charlie Yang, the Director and Head of GreenCo Singapore, emphasised the benefits of proactively managing Scope 3 emissions. “In Singapore’s increasingly green-conscious business landscape, proactive Scope 3 emissions management is crucial. It demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to environmental stewardship and positions them as a responsible corporate citizen,” he explained.

Dr. Yang further noted that Scope 3 analysis can provide organisations with a deeper understanding of their value chain, potentially identifying opportunities to improve climate resilience and reduce exposure to risks. “With a more comprehensive GHG emissions inventory, including Scope 3, organisations can take a step forward to align with internationally recognised initiatives and industry best practices that investors prefer, such as setting science-based targets, and prepare to disclose more through platforms like Climate Disclosure Project (CDP),” he added.

In Singapore’s drive towards a sustainable future, businesses that can demonstrate their commitment to managing Scope 3 emissions will be better positioned to thrive and contribute to the nation’s climate goals. Acting proactively not only helps organisations enhance their preparedness for emerging regulations and align with investor and customer expectations, but it can also strengthen brand reputation and stakeholder trust through transparent disclosures.

Dr. Charlie Yang, Director and Head of GreenCo Singapore

GreenCo Transforms Climate Risk Management for Companies with Innovative Tools and Calculation Models https://greenco-esg.com/transforms-crm/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 02:02:56 +0000 https://greenco-esg.com/?p=9747

GreenCo Transforms Climate Risk Management for Companies with Innovative Tools and Calculation Models

Climate Risk Management Policy

GreenCo, as one of leading ESG consultancy in Hong Kong, is proud to share their advancements in climate risk management policy, scenario analysis, and quantitative models for assessing the financial impact of climate change. With a focus on addressing the global trend and upcoming regulatory enhancements implemented by the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (“Stock Exchange”), GreenCo has developed cutting-edge tools and models that empower its clients to navigate the challenges posed by climate-related risks.

GreenCo’s Expertise and Customization

GreenCo is actively assisting several clients across food and beverage, gaming, flavour and fragrances, tourism and oil and gas industry in developing climate risk management policies and conducting scenario analyses, thereby preparing for the enhanced disclosure. By leveraging the expertise of experts, GreenCo have been formulating comprehensive systems covering climate risk identification, integration and prioritisation based on our clients’ preparedness and business nature, and guide them through the complex landscape of climate risk assessment and mitigation.

The Company offers a comprehensive suite of services tailored to address the specific needs of our clients in climate risk management. The company’s innovative tools, models and programs enable companies to identify, assess, and prioritise climate-related risks effectively through combining their operation location, business activity and climate data. Through scenario analysis and quantitative modelling, they provide in-depth insights into the potential financial impacts of climate change on businesses and recommendations for bridging any gaps identified in their current policies.

Aligning with International Standard

GreenCo’s competitive edge lies in their ability to combine technical expertise with a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape. GreenCo’s team comprises highly skilled professionals well-versed in environmental science, environmental management, green building, geographic information system, finance and investment. The team continuously updates their models to align with emerging regulations and industry best practices, facilitating the clients in staying ahead of the curve.

Especially in consideration of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) S2 Climate-related Disclosures, on which the Stock Exchange based the coming regulatory enhancement, the framework development process consists of a series of material and correlated steps, which require robust ESG knowledge to generate meaningful outputs. GreenCo can assist companies in developing a customised data collection tool, with which companies can easily understand what data and information are required for meaningful climate risk assessment and mitigation.

Climate-related financial impact projection, while being a critical step for assessing the impacts of climate change on businesses, faces several challenges. One primary difficulty lies in the uncertainty inherent in predicting future climate and business conditions. The complexity of climate systems and the multitude of interconnected variables make accurate financial forecasting challenging. Difficulties in obtaining precise climate data and determining appropriate projection factors always hinder the analytic results.

Max Tsang, Director of GreenCo

Although the Stock Exchange has postponed the implementation of the new requirements to 2025, it is advisable for companies to start early due to the extensive scope of the enhanced requirements. This broader aspect necessitates ample time for companies to gather relevant information and develop suitable calculation methodologies for analysis. Of particular significance is the inclusion of Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which requires substantial efforts and resources to engage and collaborate with a company’s supply chain. To comply with this provision, companies must first gain a comprehensive understanding of their value chain considering the 15 categories proposed by the GHG Protocol, spanning from upstream material sourcing to product end-life disposal. Each category review demands significant time and effort.

Stephanie Chan, Associate Principal Consultant at GreenCo

Conducting climate-related financial impact analysis is not a simple task, but it is crucial for forward-thinking business and fulfilling disclosure obligations. In an era marked by unprecedented environmental challenges and regulatory shifts, understanding the potential future climate impact is of great importance to decision-making and business prosperity. On top of tech tools and models, we take pride in offering face-to-face, in-depth practical training, such as short-term secondments in our office, to acquire sustainability reporting and advisory knowledge on the job. This approach enables clients to build the expertise needed to independently manage a high-quality sustainability report.

Max Tsang, Director of GreenCo

Reliable ESG Advisory Service

GreenCo has established a strong track record in ESG advisory, reinforcing their position as a trusted partner for companies striving to achieve sustainable growth. The Company’s dedicated team has successfully guided numerous clients through the complexities of ESG reporting, climate policy development, and sustainability strategy formulation. In 2023, GreenCo successfully assisted one of their clients in winning the “Best in ESG Reporting” and “Outstanding ESG Enterprises Recognition Scheme” awards in Hong Kong, which serve as a recognition of their competence and efforts in the ESG industry.

As our group continues to grow and expand, it is important that our office space reflects our brand, mission, and values. That is why we have recently undergone a complete renovation, creating a modern and comfortable workspace that is not only aesthetically pleasing but functional and conducive to productivity.

Our new office included a variety of workspaces to cater to different needs and preferences. Interviews, brainstorming sessions, and creative team meetings can all take place in our modern meeting rooms. We have also installed a soundproof meeting room to ensure a quiet and uninterrupted space for important discussions, phone call or video conferences.

Additionally, we have designed an inviting layout to promote communication, enabling a more collaborative work environment that helps us work smarter, not harder. By adding more colour throughout the office, we have created a space that is both comforting and energizing.

Overall, our newly renovated office was a significant investment we made for the well-being of our employees, the efficiency of our operations, and the satisfaction of our clients. We hope that our new work space inspires collaboration, innovative thinking, and a culture of excellence.
