Forced labour

Forced labor, also known as forced labor or involuntary servitude, refers to a form of labor in which individuals are compelled to work against their will, under the threat of punishment or harm. It is considered a serious violation of human rights and is prohibited under international law.

Key Matters and Considerations in ESG

Here are some key points about forced labor:

– Definition: Forced labor involves situations where individuals are coerced or deceived into work, and they cannot refuse or leave due to threats, violence, debt bondage, or other forms of coercion. It can take various forms, including bonded labor, human trafficking, and forced domestic or agricultural work.

– Exploitation and Abuse: Those subjected to forced labor often endure harsh and unsafe working conditions, long hours, and receive little or no pay. They may experience physical and psychological abuse, restriction of movement, confiscation of identity documents, and denial of basic rights and freedoms.

– Modern-Day Slavery: Forced labor is often associated with modern-day slavery. It is estimated that millions of people worldwide are trapped in situations of forced labor, with the majority occurring in industries such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing, domestic work, and the sex trade.

– International Legal Framework: Forced labor is explicitly prohibited under international law, including the International Labour Organization (ILO) Forced Labour Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). Many countries have also enacted laws to criminalize and combat forced labor.

– Corporate Responsibility: Businesses have a responsibility to respect human rights and ensure that forced labor is not present within their operations or supply chains. This includes conducting due diligence, implementing robust policies and procedures, and working with suppliers to prevent and address any instances of forced labor.

– Combating Forced Labor: Efforts to combat forced labor involve a multi-stakeholder approach, including governments, civil society organizations, businesses, and consumers. Key actions include raising awareness, strengthening legal frameworks, enhancing enforcement and penalties, promoting responsible business practices, and supporting victims through rehabilitation and access to justice.

– Sustainable Development Goals: Target-7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for the eradication of forced labor, modern slavery, and human trafficking by 2030. Governments, businesses, and civil society are working towards achieving this target through coordinated efforts and partnerships.

Efforts to combat forced labor aim to protect the rights and dignity of individuals, promote fair and ethical labor practices, and create a more equitable and just society for all.
